Biography:

Studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level. Am currently in my second out of four years studying Materials Science at the University of Oxford.

Approach to Tutoring:

Rather than just teaching content, I believe that tutoring students to think a certain way, and to approach problems or questions with an improved mindset and way of thinking, is just as important as knowing the content. I am aware that tutoring should be specific to each student and so rather than adopting a general method I find it exciting to find engaging ways for students to learn through listening, writing and reading. I can adapt very quickly, and I can see what works and what doesn't work so well for a student in a short period of time, so that the tutoring the student receives will be best suited to their learning style. When understanding mathematical and scientific concepts, I believe using analogies to simplify the problem can be very helpful, and can really assist students in building a solid understanding. In addition to this, reversing the role and allowing the student to 'teach' the tutor by explaining their thought processes around a question is an extremely effective method that I would implement. This again would result in not only a thorough understanding of the content, but also an elevated way of thinking and approaching even the difficult questions; a way of thinking that is seen everywhere at Oxford University.

Experience:

I have previous tutoring at a range of levels in a variety of subjects; I started by tutoring a year 6 student maths to ensure they were caught up over the summer to allow a good start in year 7. I then casually tutored students in the year below me during my time in Sixth Form, by assisting them with any questions or problems they had, mainly in Further Maths and Maths but also in Chemistry and Physics. Being in my second year, I regularly check on the freshers studying Materials Science and they have previously approached me for help in tutorial sheets and writing academic reports.

Other Interests:

Alongside my studies I am involved with University music and sport, playing in the Oxford University String Ensemble and rowing for Trinity College's 1st women's team. I also am on the executive team for my college's commemoration ball this June, which is a large event of 1400 people. I am chief marketing officer and enjoy organising and running events to increase interest in the ball, as well as running the social media and creating giveaways for the Oxford student community.
